Retractable fall arrestors and fall arrest blocks function like a car seat belt, a re-coiling main spring keeps the lifeline in light tension, allowing it to respond in the event of a fall. If the extraction speed of the lifeline exceeds 0,5 m/sec, the brake system is activated and will lock into place. resulting in the deceleration of the faller. The faller will initially travel vertically until tensioning of the fall arrest system occurs. At this moment the faller will begin a swing fall which will bring him under the anchorage and beyond, leading to collision with anything in his path. A worker using a self retracting lifeline device should operate in an arc no more than thirty degrees from the anchorage point.
