HDG barriers fall protection at construction project

The ultimate edge protection barrier solution for construction projects

HDG barriers fall protection at construction project

Oliver Gwinnell, MD at SafetyRespect UK discusses a significant evolution in the temporary edge protection barrier marketplace, the Hot Dipped Galvanised barrier, the first major development of the hugely popular ‘bent mesh’ type barriers since they were launched in the mid-1990s.

“We’ve had over 25 years of the same product,” says Oliver Gwinnell, “with no change.”

“Since the first systemised edge protection solution was launched in the UK in the mid-1990s, the design, materials and finish of ‘bent mesh’ barriers have changed little. The standard finish is powder coated black steel so it’s a case of not if, but when the paint is chipped off during handling and movement and exposing of the black steel, where corrosive rust will form.

“The erosion looks poor but most importantly the material will lose strength integrity. It is an industry issue, with many firms grappling with the challenge, trying to create a solution for this gap in the market.”

Gwinnell continued, “As most companies are simply hire and sales agents, the investment in R&D with their third-party manufacturers has made it prohibitive. As SafetyRespect manufactures its own products at its factories in Germany and Turkey it was able to invest the time and money to create a solution that would differentiate it in the market. Many companies had tried the hot dipped galvanised steel treatment on the bent mesh  design before, but the toe board was too thin to withstand the procedure. After many years of requests for hot dip galvanised steel barriers, SafetyRespect dipped its toe in the challenge and was able to spend several months developing a solution, the first fundamental material change in bent mesh temporary edge protection barriers in a generation.”

Swedish engineering has reputation for quality, safety and innovation. Think Volvo, Polestar, Ikea… they all stand for one thing: ‘quality manufacturing’ and that’s SafetyRespect is no different.

Giwinnell said, “In short, the hot dipped galvanised barriers will last significantly longer than the standard products because the fundamental issue of paint chipping has disappeared. Also, the materials will remain intact with no loss of integrity, making the product safer. No rust – which makes the side of buildings unsightly and affects the main or sub-contractors on-site branding – will appear. The inevitable movement of the barriers either on-site or between sites will not lead to costly refurbishments or replacements, saving time and money.

“One of the big beneficiaries will be fleet operators, as their products will last longer because they are less susceptible to corrosion. They can be rest  assured that their hire fleet  will have an increased life span and thus the opportunity for  more profit.”

“Barrier corrosion has been a fundamental issue during the 20 years I have been in the temporary edge protection industry. I have worked for other suppliers and this had always been an issue for customers.

“There are other hot dip galvanised barriers on the market but they tend to be ‘framed mesh’ design barriers and are much heavier. A big part of the popularity and success of the ‘bent’ mesh design is that it is robust yet lightweight; it was important  that the barrier remained a one man lift within the manual handling regulations.”

“I’m delighted that SafetyRespect can develop and bring products, such as this barrier, to market. Our point of difference is having our own factories. – we can invest in R&D but also control the manufacturing process and therefore the delivery timeframes.”

Temporary edge protection at construction project Gramercy Tower Cardiff UK

Complete fall protection solution for the construction project Gramercy Tower, Cardiff UK

Gramercy Tower is a 27-storey apartment scheme under construction in Cardiff and SafetyRespect UK is delivering temporary edge protection and personal fall protection to the project. When completed it will be the tallest tower in Cardiff UK.

The Principle Contractor for this project is South Wales based Intelle Construction. Concrete Structures and Floors are responsible for delivering the reinforced concrete frame structure. TGM Facades UK Ltd, a leading European Facade manufacture based in The Netherlands are providing a unitised facade system which consists of aluminium unitized elements with louvres and esthetical aluminium fins, rainscreen cladding with SFS and several windows and doors. This project has a joined up approach to Fall Protection which is planned to avoid unnecessary risk of falls from height.

SAFETYRESPECT PLANNED SAFETY FOR FALL PROTECTION RIGHT THROUGH THE WORK AT HEIGHT HIERARCHY
Concrete Structures and Floors are using Temporary edge protection and catch fans that have been manufactured and supplied by SafetyRespect UK Ltd. The temporary edge protection system has been positioned on top of the floor slabs, around all perimeters. Barriers and Posts are removed for installation of Facade Brackets at floor level. These are replaced upon completion and don’t need to be removed again until glazed units are installed, effectively sealing the structure with permanent envelope.

CATCH FANS
Catch fans are a preventative measure to protect anyone working directly below a live structure from falling objects. They are designed to catch and contain falling objects by absorbing dynamic load into its catch area, manufactured from netting with a layer of fine mesh to prevent the ingress of small items as small as nails or bolts. The fan can be installed without any need of cranes and this version is designed to be installed on concrete floor slabs edges.

Scissorsafe cast in anchor for personal fall protection

TGM FACADES SPECIFIED THE UTILISATION OF THE SCISSORSAFE ANCHOR TO SUPPORT THEIR TEMPORARY WORK RESTRAINT SYSTEM
Scissorsafe is a cast-in anchorage system that eliminates the need to drill into concrete slabs. Efficiency and economy is achieved because the Scissorsafe anchor inserts and locks into pockets cast into the concrete -no drills, dust or load-testing required.

Unitised facade panels will be attached to the edge of concrete slabs around the entire perimeter of the Gramercy Tower structure. Installers will be protected during the facade install using collective and personal fall protection from our standard range of products. Temporary edge protection is installed on top of concrete slabs by the Formwork subcontractor. To install facade brackets to the edge of floor slabs, the Facade Installer installs a temporary running line (work restraint system) supported by Scissorsafe anchors. Temporary edge protection barriers are removed allowing access to edge of slabs. Installers access floor slab edges by adjusting work restraint lanyards.

Scissorsafe is a cast in system with reusable anchors, designed to prevent construction workers from falling from perimeters and edges. Plastic void formers are cast into the concrete simply by nailing them to the formwork. When the concrete has hardened and the formwork is removed, the anchorage points are exposed in the soffits.

Once installed, anyone working on the unprotected leading edge can use these anchorage points by inserting a Scissorsafe anchorage tool into them. Our product has an unique design that opens within the concrete void and is locked by the connecting device. They do not rely on friction and they are reusable wherever an anchor point has been cast.

The Scissorsafe system is used for fall restraint and fall arrest systems providing overhead anchorage for temporary horizontal lifelines (running-lines). Work positioning and fall arrest systems are widely used for installing curtain-walling, unitised facades and balcony installation.

Our Catch fans provide reliable protection against falling objects during the construction period and catch workers who have accidents. Made up of just a few components, the Catch fan not only protects construction site personnel, but also the public, depending on the situation and application.

Due to the 3 m cantilever, the Catch fan in front of the building creates an appropriate protection zone against falling objects, such as materials, tools or construction debris. In addition, it is intended to cushion falls of injured construction site personnel and to enable rescue.

Due to its application possibilities, the Catch Fan can be adapted to a wide variety of construction situations. It can also be used in confined spaces without any problems, as the Catch Fan can
be folded up towards the façade and be secured, e.g. to allow material transport near the ceiling edge.

The safety net has a mesh size of 60×60 mm. The standard scope of delivery of the Catch Fan also includes a fine-mesh net with a mesh size of 20×20 mm. It is firmly connected to the safety net to protect against falling small objects. On customer request, the net structure can additionally be provided with a third layer of a 2×3 mm dust protection net.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
Once a year, the Catch Fans in use must be inspected. The main focus here is on the material safety of the net structures. For this purpose, one of the test threads attached to the Catch Fan net must be sent to Vivatec or to an accredited testing institute. The regular safety checks on the construction site and the checks after load impacts remain unaffected by this requirement.
